Hi Chris,
Predictions on the websites like 3gbbs.com and 51ielts.com
say that there is a topic about "a historical personage". And there's even a
record of usage on September 5 in a teacher's blog.
In the December 5th's test, will there be any new topics?
I'm so worried about that.
---------------------------------------------------
My Reply
I think they are mistaken. I have not seen this topic
(as a Part 2 topic) mentioned even once in the bulletin boards in China or overseas. There is
something like that in Part 3 of one of the topics, but not for the "Intelligent
Person" topic. I might be wrong but I haven’t seen it yet as a Part 2 topic.

The test managers have made a major
change by introducing new topics, both Part 1 and Parts 2/3 on November 14!
I do not have time right now to
write about these changes in detail – I will do it tomorrow night or the
next day. Several old Part 2 topics (or topics close to these old topics)
seem to have returned to the test, possibly with new Part 3 questions. Some
of these are listed below.
Topic 129 seems to have
returned but it now seems to be, " A Letter or Card"
Topic 80, "A Special Meal"
Topic 76, "Something You Made
by Hand"
Topic 127, "A Project or
Homework Assignment"
Topic 18 or 36, "Your Favourite
School Subject"
Topic 24 or 122, "A City you
have Visited"
Topic 88, "A Childhood Book"
Topic 157, "An Old Person You
Admire" (or another of the previous "old person" topics)
- Possibly there is also a new Part
2 topic called, "An Old Thing".
- Part 1 also seems to have some new
topics: "Weather"; "Time" (including watches); "Neighbours"; and possibly,
"Advice".
Nov. 10, 2009
- The following pages have been
changed to reflect the likely retirement of these topics:

time. It looks like there are 60 possible Part 2/3 topics.
- The wording for Topic 227,
The Perfect Climate, (on this page,
PARTS_2_and_3_P46.htm)
was slightly changed and notes were added for this topic.

- In the test of Sep. 17/18, no-one
reported any new Part 1 topics and no-one reported that they got the
"Flowers" topic in Part 1. So it looks like the examiners were possibly not
using the new Part 1 in that test.
Sept. 16, 2009

- There are still six new Part 2/3
topics that I haven't written up yet.
Sept. 8, 2009
- So far, it looks like 13 of the
(probably) 15 new Part 2/3 topics have been discovered. These can be seen
listed on the
Part 2
Index page, numbers 214 to 226. However, so far I have only written up
the first three topics. I will try to finish the others tonight.
- I have linked Topics 221, 222, 224
and 226 to old, retired topics that look like they are very similar to these
four new ones. But that's all I have done for those four new topics.
- The following other pages were
changed:
PARTS_2_and_3_P43.htm
PARTS_2_and_3_P44.htm
PARTS_2_and_3_P45.htm
PARTS_2_and_3_P46.htm
Sept. 6, 2009
- Yesterday, we also saw that some
of the older Part 1 topics from
September to December 2008 were being used. Some of these topics had
already been in use before September 2008, so they are more than 12 months
old. See Special
Comments on Part 1 for more on this.
- There were also a few new Part 2
topics introduced yesterday, for example, "Describe an Intelligent
Person (who you know)." I will be updating the website on these new
topics later this evening. For those of you doing the test today, sorry,
you'll just have to read the 51ielts.com and 3gbbs.com pages yourself.
Sept. 3, 2009
- I have added a few points to the
page,
WRITING_BLOG_3.htm, which deals with the topic of hackneyed phrases (陈腐的短语)
in essays. This is a
complex topic and I will write more on this later. I also added a few more
internet links on this topic.
- I have also updated the pages
related to Part 1, to reflect the fact that the current Part 1 is now
composed of a new set of topics and questions. Of course, at the moment, the
current Part 1 Questions page is mostly just a prediction. After the test of
Sept. 5, this page will start to more accurately reflect the current topics
and questions in use.
- The page, All Part 1 Questions has
not yet been updated to include any new topics and questions that were
introduced into the test in May, 2009.
Aug. 25, 2009
- On the page,
Vocabulary
Lists Page 2, I have tried to make topic 28, "A sense of + noun" much
easier to understand. This is a complex and abstract topic that I found
rather difficult to write about so don't worry if you find it too difficult
to understand. This topic is more suited to people who are at about Band 7
already.
Aug. 23, 2009
- The page,
Speaking Test Summary has been revamped with a few extra points also
added to it. The main changes were that I took the Introduction Phase of the
test out of Part 1, putting it as a separate part of the test, and I changed
the recommended average length for Part 1 answers from 20 seconds to 22
seconds. (Many IELTS examiners, especially the ones who were trained with
me, were not clear on whether the Introduction Phase was considered to be
part of Part 1 but I now believe it is not Part of Part 1.)
- See the note written today, August
23 on
this page about a possible new Part 2 topic that might have been
introduced into the test early. And
don't forget to read
my main predictions about the upcoming new Part 2/3 topics, written on
August 7 on that same page.
Aug. 22, 2009
- I have added a few extra questions
in the Part 1 and Parts 2/3 pages, added a few notes and added an
FQ here and there. I don't have time right now
to point out exactly what changes were made.
- In fact, if you look at the dates
of these pages, you will see that I have made several of these changes or
additions since July 30 without always changing the date on the front page that
says, "Last change: .....". In other words, you can't always
believe that the date on the front page is truly the last time I made a
change! I change the date on the front page when significant
or major changes have been made.
- I haven't updated the 2009 Topic
Usage page since the test of July 11 but I can tell you that all
the current Part 2 topics have been reported as used in almost every test up
to the most recent test (August 12). The topic, "A Good Law" was dropped
from the list of current topics because it was reported so few times.
Aug. 13, 2009
Aug. 8, 2009
- Some important and (I hope) very
useful notes for Topic #204, "A Party" were written. These notes focus on
the correct grammar to use for that topic. Although the notes might seem
long and complex, you should try to read and understand them if you
realistically think you have a good chance of getting a 6.0 for Speaking.
This is because most people who get a 5.5 for Speaking are getting a 5 for
the grammar sub-score. These notes might make the difference between a 5 for
grammar and a 6 (or even a 7) for grammar. The notes also apply to other
topics that have the wording, "you would like to" in the first line of the
Part 2 question. See
here for the notes.
Aug. 7, 2009
- I have written some predictions
for the changes to the Part 2/3 topics that will occur on (or even before)
September 5. These predictions are on this page:
NOTES_ABOUT_CURRENT_PART_2_TOPICS.htm
- I have deleted Topic 214, "A Good
Law (2)" from the list of current topics and from Page 43. I doubt that this
topic was ever used in the test after April this year. (But that does not
mean it is impossible for this topic to return on September 5!)
Aug. 5, 2009
- I have formed some vocabulary
lists based on the words that are used in the Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3
questions listed on this website. The 'start page' for these lists is:
VOCABULARY_FROM_QUESTIONS_start_page.htm
Aug. 1, 2009
July 31, 2009
- A new item was added to the page,
COHESIVE_DISCOURSE_MARKERS.htm. This is, "25.
Talking about the Beginning".
In the same way that, "At last"
has a different meaning to "Last" and "Lastly", "At first" has a different
meaning to "First" and "Firstly".
- On that same page, I also tried to
clarify my previous notes on the use of the words, "on the contrary".
July 29, 2009
- In the past few days, most of the
Part 2/3 pages and the Part 1 question page have had some questions added.
July 24, 2009
July 23, 2009
July 21, 2009
- I've decided to pay more attention
to the topic of IELTS writing. As part of this renewed attention to writing,
I have added a short page on the topic of Coherence and Cohesion. That can
be found at
WRITING_BLOG_4.htm. I have also made a few small changes to the
following pages:
IELTS_WRITING.htm and
WRITING_BLOG_1.htm.
July 16, 2009
- The Part 1 topic, "The Internet"
has been added to the
current list of Part 1 topics. It looks like the same questions for that
topic that were used from January to April this year are being used again.
July 8, 2009
- I'm back! I've changed the note
on the front page (highlighted in yellow) from, "no changes after June 30
for several weeks" to "not many
changed after June 30 for several weeks".
- The most important change I want
to bring to your attention is the wording for Part 2
Topic 206, "A Trip", on
Page 42 and the notes for that topic (for the Part 2 and Part 3). I changed
the Part 2 wording several days ago but today I rewrote (or added to) the
notes for Part 2 and wrote an extra note for Part 3.
June 30, 2009
11pm
- The following pages were changed:
PARTS_2_and_3_INDEX_P2.htm
QUESTION_NOTES_PAGE_3.htm
Part_1_Questions_MAY_to_AUG_2009.htm
All the Parts 2/3 pages from Page 33 to Page 43
June 30, 2009
- I am still adding a little to the
website! (But, as I wrote two days ago, there will be very little or no
change to the website for the next few weeks.)
- I just want to let you know that I
have added a few more websites to the page, INTERNET_ENGLISH_STUDY.htm,
some of which are very good for your listening and pronunciation. I
especially recommend
this website for adding to your basic vocabulary.
June 28, 2009
- Since June 22, the current Part 1
and (I think) all the Part 2/3 pages from Pages 33 to 43 have been changed.
Screenshots of these changes are shown in
CHANGES_JUN_28_2009.zip These changes do not include any new information
from the test of June 27/28.
- The Language Function pages were
indexed on
Page 1 and
Page 2 was improved in several places, especially in the sections about
Speculating about the Future and Expressing Your Plans, Intentions
and Hopes for the Future.
-
I will not be making any changes or
updates to this website for several weeks from today.
June 25, 2009
- The page, "How
to Learn to Speak English" has been tidied up. I have also added some
comments about overcoming the habit of translating from Chinese (or whatever
language you speak) when trying to speak English. This was written in the
section about speaking with a language partner,
here. I have also
tidied up my comments on studying in a conversation class at a language
school and I have put these comments onto a
separate page.
June 22, 2009
In the past few days the following
changes were made:
- The topic history pages for 2008,
2007 and 2006 were re-organized. Now, the information for those years is
only available in zipped Microsoft Access files.
- The page
WORD_COMBINATION_LISTS.htm was changed with the addition of "Type 4"
stress pattern examples. In addition to that, a few links to audio files on
the internet were added to all the pages that start from
WORD_COMBINATION_LISTS.htm.
- The page
How_to_Learn_to_Speak_English.htm was changed with the addition of my
comments and suggestions about improving your spoken English by attending
classes at a language school. That page is now quite long now so you might
want to use the
翻译
facility to make it easier to read fast.
- The specific changes to the Part 1 and Parts 2/3 pages made since May
27 can be seen in the
screenshots in
CHANGES_JUN_22_2009.zip
June 16, 2009
- Many links to audio recordings on
the internet have now been added to some pages in the Pronunciation section
of this website. This is all on the topic of intonation, or more
specifically, the different stress
patterns (着重模式) when speaking noun + noun or
adjective + noun combinations (and sometimes other kinds
of words that form compound nouns, 复合名词).
I think this is a rather important
aspect of pronunciation, (although there are also other important aspects).
Hopefully, with many audio recordings to listen to and mimic, you will
better understand and learn the correct stress patterns to use. The lists of
words on the pages below are not meant to be lists of "IELTS vocabulary".
Instead, they are meant to illustrate the principles behind the different
stress patterns. Some examples in the lists are not very suitable for the
IELTS test but you will probably find some new words and expressions that
you can usefully add to your vocabulary. On the other hand, the Type 3 page does have
one list that I suggest you treat as part of your "essential IELTS
vocabulary".
Don't be afraid of the complexity
of this topic. Just try to understand and be able to produce the correct
stress patterns for different types of word combinations. Basically, there
are just two different types of stress patterns here, Type 1 and Type 2. All
you need to do is recognize when to use the Type 1 stress pattern (or,
intonation, 语调) and when to use the Type 2. (Type
3 is a special case of the Type 1 stress pattern and Type 4 is a special
case of the Type 2 stress pattern.)
I have not finished this work but
there is enough here for you to start using these pages.
The pages listed below were either changed or are new.

- The specific changes to the pages made since May 7 can be seen in the
screenshots in CHANGES_MAY_16_2009.zip
However, there are no screenshots for the new Part 1 page because almost all
of the page is new. Likewise, Part 2 Pages 41 & 42 are not shown because
they are completely new.

some topics as "Probably No Longer Used".
- More questions and screenshots of recent changes will be
added later.
MAY 10, 2009
- After yesterday afternoon's Speaking
tests, I have updated the Part 1 page: Part_1_Questions_MAY_to_AUG_2009.htm
There will certainly be more information coming from today's tests.
- For you guys who are doing the test
today, sorry, I have not had time to update any of the Part 2/3 topics and
questions yet. You'll just have to look at www.51ielts.com
and www.3gbbs.com yourself.
MAY 7, 2009
- I recently discovered that there
were several Part 1 questions that I didn't add to the Part 1 list for
Jan-Apr 2009 and for May-Aug 2009. This has now been done.
- The following pages were
changed:

(Many of these screenshots are duplicates, showing the same changes to the
Jan Part 1 questions, the new May Part 1 questions and the 'All Part 1' list
of questions.)

- A new webpage was also written for
those people who don't know how to save webpages or download files. The link
for this is shown on the homepage. The page is: How_to_Save_Webpages.htm.
April 14, 2009
April 13, 2009
- The following pages were changed: 2009 TOPIC USAGE.doc,
2009 TOPIC USAGE.doc.zip
and 2009 TOPIC
USAGE.mdb.zip were updated following the tests of March 14, 21 and April
4. (All three of these documents contain the same information. You only need to read
one of them. The original mdb file will no longer be uploaded to the website
- just download the zip file of it if you want to read the information in
that form of file.)
- Also, the following pages were
changed: Part
1 Questions Jan - Apr 2009, Part
2 Index Page 2, Question
Notes Parts 2 & 3, Page 2, Parts
2/3 Page 33, Parts

2/3 Page 40 & Notes
about Current Part 2 Topics (about predictions for the Part 2/3 topics
on and after May 9, 2009)
- More questions will be added over
the next few days.
- Note for those doing the test on
May 9 or after that date: There is usually a Part 2 topic about films in
the test but, at the moment, there isn't one. So we can expect a new topic
about films to be introduced into the test on May 9. See previous Topics #6,
#99
and #145.
April 9, 2009
- It seems that some people can't find
the Part 1 and Parts 2/3 questions on this website. I've written a new page
to help you find these questions if you can't find them. See the page, HOW_TO_FIND_THE_QUESTIONS.htm.
A link to this page is also shown on the front page.
April 8, 2009
- About 25% to 30% of the Part 2/3 and Part 1 topics will
change on May 9 (or possible earlier). I have made some predictions about
these changes. See here
for the Part 2 predictions and here
for the Part 1 predictions.
- All the topics and questions in the current Part 1 (Jan
-Apr 2009) have been added to the page, "All
Part 1 Questions" (if they were not already on that page).
- In the notes for Part 2 Topic #178. A TV Program
(on the page, Parts
2/3 Page 36), I have added an extra possible
version for the Part 2 wording. I am admitting the possibility that the
topic card says, "Describe a story you watched on TV".
However, although I admit it is possible that these are the words, I still
believe this is a mistake! I still think people are misunderstanding the
wording of Topic #151.

in meaning to what it was before. Now, you have to answer using hypothetical
language (假设的话).

- I have labeled the following part 2
topics as Possibly
Still in Use but
I actually doubt that they are still in use: 141, 144, 145 & 181. I'm
just labeling them as "possibly still in use" because some people hinted
that they got those topics last weekend. We'll see if they are still being
used over the next two tests. If they aren't used, those topics will be
labeled as retired topics.
- Note there's a new Part 2 topic, #
196 and a new Part 1 topic, "Handwriting".

changed and a new Part 2 topic, # 195. Your

- There are still several new
questions from the recent tests that have not yet been added to the website.
These will be added over the next few days.

- See this note I wrote on the Part 1
page:
Note:
I was not expecting the topics of Names, Museums
& Art Galleries, Letters & Emails
and Gifts to stay in Part 1 after December 2008 but some
people reported these topics on the weekend of January 10/11. Don't be
surprised if these topics are used for just 2 or 3 tests and then suddenly
replaced by different topics.
January 13, 2009
-
Certainly,
several Part 2/3 topics were retired but we will need to see the topic usage
for the next two or three tests before we can say with confidence which ones
were retired. Read this
page, to see which topics probably were retired. On that page, I guessed
that 3 or 4 topics would continue in the test and that we would see 8 to 10
new topics. Well, 12 new topics have already been discovered (although 1 or
2 might be eliminated as 'Not real Part 2 topics' in the future). So it
seems that maybe only 1 or 2 of the old topics are staying in the test, or
maybe even none at all.
- A folder holding jpg screenshots of
the changes made recently can be found at CHANGES_JAN_13_2009.zip.
Note that Part 2 Pages 38 & 39 are not shown in that file because, since
they are new, everything is a change. Similarly for the new topics on Page
37. Part 1 changes are not included in that file this time - consider all of
it to be new.
January 11, 2009
- I have only had a look at a few of
the internet postings from yesterday, Saturday January 10 but several new
Part 2/3 topics were found.
- I'll add more information and some
screenshots showing the exact changes tomorrow.
