Dec. 14, 2010

• A new page, Predictions_for_January_to_April_2011.htm was written.

• TOPIC_USAGE_2010_P3.htm was updated with information from the Dec. 11 test.

• I have deleted the Part 2 topic, 279.  Your Future Work Plans because I think there is only one topic at the moment related to work, 277.  An Interesting Job. This leaves the number of current Part 2 topics at the odd number of 49. PARTS_2_and_3_INDEX_P3.htm and PARTS_2_and_3_P56.htm were changed as a result of this change.

• Some small changes were also made to the following pages: PARTS_2_and_3_P50.htm,  PARTS_2_and_3_P55.htm,  PARTS_2_and_3_P56.htm ,  PARTS_2_and_3_P57.htm,  and  PARTS_2_and_3_P59.htm.

• There are still a few questions that have been reported in the past few tests that I haven't yet added to the Part 1 or Part 3 pages.

• TOPIC_USAGE_2010_P3.htm was updated with information from the Nov. 27 and Dec. 4 tests. There were no surprises in this information.

• I added an email from a student, along with my answer at Random Emails from Students P. 5. This email was asking for my opinion about a "model" Part 2 answer that this student had found in an IELTS Speaking text book from China.

• This is the first day of the website being available at its new home. If you tell anyone the address of this new location, http://ielts-yasi.englishlab.net/, remember not to include "www".

• With the change of address (and change of location) of this website, there will be more students from Europe and other places reading these pages than was the case before. You guys who are not in China should understand that about 90% of my information comes from bulletin boards in China, referring to people's test experiences in China. (The biggest group of IELTS test takers, by far, is in China.) However, as far as I can see, the test is mostly the same all over the world. I say "mostly" because I have seen evidence that, sometimes, some topics that are recently retired in China have stayed in use for a while in other places, such as Australia. But it looks like the new topics in China are usually the same as the new topics all over the world, although these new topics might be introduced in other places a bit later than in China. I'm sorry, I can't do much better than that for you guys outside China because I simply don't have enough information.

• The disruption caused by the cancellation of the website at the previous address (www.yasi-kouyu.com.cn) caused me not to stay fully up-to-date on all the new information that people report on the internet about their test experiences, that is, all the new questions. However, I have kept an eye on the topics themselves and I can tell you that what is shown on this website now is about right, concerning what topics and questions are being used. The page, TOPIC_USAGE_2010_P3.htm shows what Part 2 topics were reported as used in China up to and including November 20. When I catch up on reviewing all the information that is out there on the internet, there will be some changes such as refinements to the wording of some Part 2 topics and some extra questions.

• I think you can be reasonably confident that what is shown on this website now will stay current until the end of December, even if I don't update anything for the next month, (although there's always the possibly of some sudden, unexpected changes occurring!) It is possible that some new Part 1 and Parts 2/3 topics might start to be used in the latter tests of December, just before the regular new change that will happen at the first test in January. This has happened a few times before.

• I previously wrote to some people saying that I would no longer be "telling the world" about the information I gather about the real topics and questions. I wrote that I would only be using this information with the students in my classes. Well, I've changed my mind about this – for the foreseeable future, I will continue to update this website with that information, as I was doing before my former website was taken off the internet.

• The page My_Subject_Some_Common_Errors.htm was also changed in a few small ways.

• Some Part 2 topics were labeled as (Probably no longer used) and some were labeled as Possibly no longer used. This second label means that there is a strong likelihood that these topics have been taken out of the test but I am not yet confident enough about this to give them the red label. • A small number of new questions were added to all the Part 2/3 pages from Page 53 to Page 61, and Pages 49 and 51. (Find those pages by first going to PARTS_2_and_3_INDEX_P3.htm.)

• Especially important is the wording for Topic 284, "A New Law". Although the wording is still not very clear, it seems the topic is, "Describe a new law you would like to see introduced into your country."

• A new page was started, QUESTION_NOTES_PAGE_6.htm (with notes for Part 2 and part 3).

• A few days ago, an error was corrected on the page, Part_1_Questions_Sep_to_Dec_2010.htm.

• There were no big surprises after the test of September 25/26.

• The page, TOPIC_USAGE_2010_P3.htm has been updated to show the Part 2 topic that were reported as used on Sept. 25/26.

• I have also changed the labels on some topics to (Probably no longer used), topics that previously were labeled as Possibly Still in Use. The page, NOTES_ABOUT_CURRENT_PART_2_TOPICS-2010.htm explains this change. As well as that, these labels were changed on the following pages, PARTS_2_and_3_INDEX_P3.htm, PARTS_2_and_3_P44.htm,  PARTS_2_and_3_P46.htm,  PARTS_2_and_3_P47.htm,  PARTS_2_and_3_P48.htm,  PARTS_2_and_3_P49.htm and PARTS_2_and_3_P50.htm.

• This website was unavailable on Saturday Sept. 4 and most of Sunday. I'm guessing the reason is because the server was overloaded  – the site had been getting an unusually large number of visitors in the three days before it crashed.

• The test on the weekend of Sept. 4 in China revealed many new Part 2/3 topics and it looks like most of the Topics 216, 229 to 242 and Topic 247 were not used. Quite a few of the new topics seem to be repeats from previous years, or very similar to previously used topics.

• A reminder for candidates in China (I don't know about the situation in other parts of the world): If you look at the Part 2 topic usage history for this year and for Sep.-Dec. 2009, you'll see that the topics that were due for retirement were still used at different times during the first month of the new 4-month period. That means you can expect Topics 216, 229 to 242 and Topic 247 to be used again in at least one test in September, maybe more than one test. With the new topics now in the test, this gives you more to prepare than is the usual situation, but that's the way it is.

• A few of the Part 1 questions for the topics, Your Work, Your Studies and Your Hometown have been deleted from the current Part 1 questions page, Part_1_Questions_May_to_Aug_2010.htm. But a copy of those deleted questions has been made here. As well as that, some parts of the Part 1 page have been rearranged. For example, a few of the questions in the Hometown topic have been moved to a new sub-topic within the Hometown topic called "Your Family".

• The page, Part_1_Questions_May_to_Aug_2010.htm was changed with the addition of several new questions. Not only that, six topics were deleted from this page because they have not been reported as being used in May and June. The first note on that page (the current Part 1 questions) explains this in a little more detail.

• Today we definitely saw some of the new Part 1 & Part 2/3 topics being used in China, for the first time. "Colours" was used in Part 1. In Part 2, the following topics were used: Topic 265, (A Sport you Would like to Succeed in - but the details were not confirmed), Topic 266.  Recent Changes to your Hometown,  Topic 268,  A Piece of Equipment (2), and Topic 270, (A new music topic) were used. Another two new topics were reported in China: Topic 271, A Friend You Admire and Topic 272, A News Story that Made You Happy. (This latter topic has also been reported overseas, without any details.)

• It looks like Topic 263, A TV Program You Like does in fact exist, as a present tense topic.

• Part 2 Topic 199 has been renamed as "A Machine" and the wording of the topic have been changed. Note that, with this revised wording, it would probably not be suitable to use "a computer" as your example.

• I have added a page called, "Predictions of the Topics". Basically, I don't make predictions before each test – you should consider that any of the current Part 1 and Part 2/3 topics are equally likely to be in your test.

However, a few weeks before some of the topics are going to be retired and new topics introduced into the test, I do make some predictions about these future new topics. These predictions are only useful just before and a few weeks after the new topics have been introduced. After that time, the predictions are no longer needed because I gather information about the actual new topics being used.

• Good news! I am happy to announce that this website is (probably) not under threat of being closed down. It was a misunderstanding.
