At the most basic level, "success" means, "reaching or achieving a goal". The fact that most people have a goal, (usually their main goal in life and sometimes their only goal) of achieving a certain level of wealth is a co-incidence that causes many people to think that the only meaning of "success" is "becoming rich".
Since success is the achievement of a goal, a person who does not have a goal that others have cannot be considered to be a "failure" if he or she never even tried to achieve that goal.
Following on from the mistaken idea that "success" = "achieving great wealth", many people think that someone who has very little money is a failure. That person might be a failure in the eyes of others who believe that everyone should aim to be wealthy but that person might consider himself to be "successful" in other areas of life. Furthermore, many wealthy people do not feel themselves to be fully "successful" people in life because, for example, their family life has not been very happy.
