Notes
- If
the words on any card are 'someone you know' then you should talk about
someone who you know personally, such as a friend, family member, classmate,
work colleague or neighbour. If you choose to talk about someone such as Yao
Ming, you are showing that you don't fully understand the meaning of 'know
someone'. In the case of famous people such as Yao Ming, it is more correct
to say that you 'know about him' or, you 'know of him' but you don't really
'know him'.
Describe
what you usually do (or used to do) during your school holidays.
You
should say:

- You might still get this topic even
if you are working now.
- If the wording of the question is as shown above, your
answer should be in the present tense 一般现在时,
the 'used
to' form of the past tense or the past simple tense. 'Used to' is best if
you mean you 'always' or 'almost always' did some action in a habitual way.
If you want to use an adverb such as 'often', 'always', 'almost always',
'usually', 'frequently', 'sometimes', 'rarely', 'seldom', 'never' then using
the past tense is best.
- In
general, you should only use the past simple tense if you specify
a particular time in the past. (This specified time could be a broad
statement such as, 'once', 'one day', 'a long time ago', 'when I was a
child' etc. - you don't always need to say the exact year or day.)
- Here
are some examples: a) (From a candidate who is still a high school student)
"I usually spend my holidays reading and watching TV." b)
(From a candidate who is no longer a student) "When I was in high
school, I used to spend my holidays working in our family's
shop." c) (From any kind of candidate) "When I was in primary
school, I usually spent my holidays at my grandparents' house because
my parents were working and couldn't take care of me during the
day."
- The
words 'school holidays' refer to primary and high school holidays, usually
the summer and winter long holiday breaks from school. It is
probably ok to include or speak mainly about your university holidays but
you should tell the examiner that you are making a slight adjustment to the
question as it is written, from 'school holidays' to 'university holidays'.
(In British English, 'school' does not usually refer to tertiary education
such as university.)
- Be
careful not to confuse the word 'always' with the words 'usually' or 'often'
- the meanings are very different.
Describe
a small shop or a small family business near your home that you like to go to.
You
should say:
what
this business is
what
products or service the business sells
where
this business is located *
when
you usually go there or, how often you go there*
and explain why you like to use this shop or small business.
Describe
a memorable meal or dinner you had.
You
should say:
what
you ate
where
you had this meal
who
you ate with
and explain why this was a special meal to you.
