A List of 'Compare Questions' that are on this Website

Note

When I wrote the questions shown on this page, back in 2006, I began most of them with the word, "Compare". However, sometime in 2007 I began fewer of these questions that way because I realized that good examiners would be trying to encourage discussion in Part 3, and beginning questions with the word, "Compare" does not sound like a discussion-style question it sounds more like a Part 1 question than a Part 3 question. In other words, most of the Part 3 questions do not really begin with the word, "Compare". but the meaning of the question is as shown.

  • Compare brand-name clothes and non-brand-name clothes. Besides the price, is there much difference between the two?
  • How much do overseas fashion trends influence fashion styles in China? 
  • (Similar to above) Compare traditional Chinese clothing with modern (western) clothes.
  • Do people in China and western people wear different kinds of (styles of) clothes?

 69 Different places to buy things
  • Do people prefer to buy electronic items such as cell-phones in a street market or in a shop? 
  • Compare open-air markets and shops (especially modern shopping malls and supermarkets).
  • Is the customer service in street-markets and open-air markets the same as in (big) shops such as supermarkets?
  • Is it better to have many small market stalls all together in one place selling the same things or to have them in separate locations?

 69 Buying habits
  • Compare young people's and older people's spending habits.  [The question probably is not just about 'old people' e.g., over 60 years old, but more a contrast between young people (15 to 25) and 'older people' (over 35 or 40).]
  • Compare the spending habits of people today and people many years ago. (E.g., 10 to 50 years ago.)
 70 Interpersonal Relations/Living with Others
  • Do old people relate to others the same way that young people do?
 71 Tall buildings
  • Compare the good and bad points of (very) tall buildings.
 71 Residential & Commercial (office) buildings
  • Compare residential and commercial buildings.

  • Compare modern and old buildings. 
 72 Books and other media
  • Besides textbooks, what other materials (or teaching media) are used in schools in China?

  • Compare books and (popular) movies as media for showing (teaching) history.

  • People at different ages are suited to learning different things. Can you give some examples of this?

  • Compare watching a sports event such as a basketball game on TV and watching it at the sports stadium.
  • Compare celebrating an event in a public place such as the town square with celebrating an event at home.

  • Do children and adults have the same memorization abilities? (I.e., Who can remember or learn new things better, children or adults?)

  • Compare how children celebrate these events with how adults celebrate them?

  • Compare the things that are handmade today with what used to be handmade many years ago.

  • Compare travel and tourism today in China with the situation 20 or 30 years ago.

  • Which do you prefer, small or big shops? (Why?)
